My Freshman Year (pgs 1-40) Response

In my reading of the first forty pages of my freshman year, I was able to relate to a lot of the author's findings. First off, the author, Rebekah Nathan reflects on her studies of college life. Rebekah studeis life at AnyU, the university in which she taught anthropology for over ten years. The first thing that had caught my attention in reading was that she went "undercover" in her own university that she taught at. I would have thought that it would risk the fact that someone would recognize her. But then again, this gives her the idea of two persepectives. Rebekah went in thinking she knew her way around the campus and that she knew all she needed to know but it did not take long for her to realize how vunerable she was. She know longer could access campus by car and by faculty parking lots, instead she had to make her way around using campus bus transportation or by foot.
She reflects on her issues with being mistaken for a parent many of times to the tiny details of the decorations on the residents doors. Which brings me to my main point that I wanted to talk about. In her reflection she talks about how none of the students put up pictures of their family. Now that I think back to last year, not a lot of people had collages of family. Mostly everyone's collages were of friends at prom, parties, or just hanging out. She also made a comment about a theme being "fun." This I feel is absolutely true. You mostly see photos of friends being silly or doing stupid things being hung around the room instead of photos of serious events. Why is it that most students do not post pictures of family ? Don't you think we have grown out of the "your not my parents" phase?
